Why Your Job Applications Get No Reply (and What Actually Helps)

By Nwuba Joshua · Updated 8 November 2026

Sending 100 applications and hearing nothing back is one of the most draining parts of job hunting. It feels personal. Usually it isn't: most silence comes from a handful of fixable problems.

Here are the common ones, roughly in the order I'd check them.

1. Your CV doesn't use the job's words

Recruiters search their applicant tracking system for the exact terms in their job posting. If the job says "dbt" and your CV says "data transformation", you may never show up in their search, even if you've done the work.

This is the most common problem and the easiest to fix: for each job, use the posting's wording for the skills you genuinely have.

2. The role was never open to you

Lots of "remote" jobs are only remote within one country. Nobody tells you that when they don't reply. Before tailoring anything, check the location line and the full description for country or time-zone limits.

3. You're sending the same CV everywhere

One CV sent to 100 jobs is really one attempt repeated 100 times. A CV adjusted for each role, with the most relevant experience first, matches each job far better. Ten tailored applications usually beat fifty generic ones.

4. The basics are broken

  • Missing phone number or email, or contact details hidden in a header the ATS can't read.
  • Columns, tables or graphics that scramble when parsed.
  • No dates on roles.
  • A summary about what you want instead of what you can do.

5. Things you can't control

Sometimes the role was filled internally, the budget was cut, or hundreds of people applied on day one. That's not a verdict on you. The fix is to keep your applications targeted and steady, not to send more of them.

What I'd change first

  • Check each job is open to your location before applying.
  • Match your CV's wording to each job's key skills, honestly.
  • Fix the format basics once, then reuse that clean CV as your base.
  • Follow up: a short message to the recruiter or hiring manager on LinkedIn a few days after applying.
